Nonverbal Communication is Governed by Rules-2nd Paragraph

Miscommunication can easily take place between people from different cultures. Non-verbal behavior differs from culture to culture and so a certain gesture in my culture might be offensive to another person in another culture. Non-verbal communication is governed by rules just as non-verbal behavior and these rules are usually learned without awareness. We usually observe them when we are in formal discussions or when we make a mistake and this mistake is brought to our attention. Researchers are attempting to regulate these rules for nonverbal messages and formulate a system of norms that state what is and what is not appropriate in certain situations.

Meeting and Greeting Customs in Palestine

In palestine, like most arab muslim countries, male/female strangers greet each other with a hand shake, while male/female friends usually greet each other with a kiss on the cheek. Meanwhile, to show absolute respect from youngsters to elders they usually kiss their hand whether they were family or strangers.

When two strangers meet and they are first introduced, they usually shake hands. When two males friends meet, a handshake is exchanged and sometimes a kiss on the cheek depending on the how strong the relationship is between these two men. However, when two female friends meet, regardless how strong their relationship is, a hug is followed by a kiss on each cheek. When a male and female friend meet, a handshake is sometimes exchanged and other times just a simple "Hello. How are you?". In such situations, men do not kiss other women unless they are husband and wife, father and daughter, brother and sister, etc...

This blog belongs to Group 6 of the 162 English class of fall of 2004. This groups consists of two members: Mariam Mahmoud and Raghda Khalaf.

Our topic of research for this semester on which we will write a paper is "Meditation". We will be relating this topic to Kuwait and Islam.
