Non-verbal behavior differs from culture to culture and so a certain gesture in my culture might be offensive to another person in another culture.  Non-verbal communication is governed by rules just as non-verbal behavior and these rules are usually learned without awareness.  We usually observe them when we are in formal discussions or when we make a mistake and this mistake is brought to our attention.  Researchers are attempting to regulate these rules for nonverbal messages and formulate a system of norms that state what is and what is not appropriate in certain situations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-Mariam Mahmoud&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;P.S. When two males friends meet, a handshake is exchanged and sometimes a kiss on the cheek depending on the how strong the relationship is between these two men.  However, when two female friends meet, regardless how strong their relationship is, a hug is followed by a kiss on each cheek.  When a male and female friend meet, a handshake is sometimes exchanged and other times just a simple "Hello. How are you?".
